• All your accessories should complement your gown and work seamlessly to create the perfect overall look.

• You should always focus on your dress first and introduce accessories once this decision has been made.

• This season we are seeing a shift from the “traditional” tiara shape, with the main focus in the centre, to more side head pieces. These work beautifully with the many asymmetric gown styles currently coming through, balancing the dress perfectly.

• There are also many vintage-style headpieces, again worn on the side, which work beautifully with varied lace and vintage-inspired gowns available.

• Some head dresses are even available with the band made to blend with your hair colour. This ensures only the detail is the focus of attention and the eye is not drawn to the band.

• Consider a floral-style corsage sitting romantically on a soft chignon, as again a key theme for 2012 is floral. We are seeing many gowns with delicate floral details right through to dramatic statement piece corsages.

• If you are a traditional girl at heart there are still many gorgeous tiaras to choose from, or perhaps it could even be your “something borrowed”?

• Some brides feel complete once they put on a veil and others feel totally overwhelmed – you will instinctively know which category you fall into when you first try one on.

• Again, your veil should complement your gown. Short and dainty can work well with dresses with lots of detail, and full length veils with a dusting of tiny Swarovski crystals can look stunning with a very simple dress.

• Don’t forget to ask about veil colours too, as there are many options available to work with the many subtle differences in gown shades.

• Your shoes are your final finishing touch but can often make or break your whole look. There are some truly gorgeous bridal shoes available but keep just two rules in mind when you’re looking for the perfect pair: don’t go for a high heel if you are not used to wearing them, and make sure they feel at least reasonably comfortable when you are trying them on.

• Bear in mind that footwear designed specifically for brides is generally designed with the idea that you will not have the opportunity to break them in, so it should be comfortable from the first wear.

• Choose a design that complements your gown – stick to your vintage, lace or sparkly theme for example. You can really have fun with your bridal shoes, so why not go for it!
